OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER BORUT PAHOR

Representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Craft and Small Businesses, as well as other employer’s organizations of Slovenia, are very worried regarding the intention of trade unions not to continue the social dialogue. In order to express their concern, the organizations have sent a joint open letter to Prime Minister Borut Pahor. In the letter they stated the fact that the current economic situation is influencing not only workers, but also employers, owners of capital, companies, institutions and the state as a whole. From their point of view the current vulnerability of Slovenia to the impacts of the global crisis is, to a large extent, the consequence of unfulfilled structural changes and insufficient investment in development of knowledge and new technologies in the past 15 years. The authors of the letter agree that Slovene salaries are too low for survival but they are also convinced that they are too high for global competitiveness. The companies are unable to raise the minimum wage and, consequently, all other wages. Our common goal, to assure employment and thereby social security for all generations, is clearly stated in the letter. Therefore, the authors of the letter expect the trade unions’ representatives to remain proper partners in the framework of social dialogue and they expect them to stop insisting on unacceptable demands that can threaten our common goal. It is important to keep in mind that the unemployment rate will reach an even higher level in 2010, which will make cooperation between all partners in the framework of social dialogue all the more necessary in order to find efficient solutions. At the end of the letter, the authors encouraged Prime Minister Pahor to be determined to accept the necessary measures and decisions which are urgent for overcoming the crisis and assuring long-term development of Slovenia and global competitiveness of Slovenia’s economy. Without constructive social dialogue, there will be no doable and balanced solutions, which can solely provide a better future for us all.
